017 : Power in the Mundane of Motherhood
Are you a Mama? Is it hard for you to find joy in the mundane moments of your daily life? Co-hosts Maddie and Kaitlin completely understand that mentality and are here in this episode to tell listeners the importance of the mundane moments of motherhood. This episode gets deep and offers insight, advice, and truths about those "small" moments in motherhood from the perspective of two women with young children.
“becoming a mama we always think about the big moments. those days where they start walking, go to kindergarten, go to prom, graduate, get married. So exciting! But we don’t really think about the little moments: like being up at three a.m. rocking your baby to sleep, changing diapers, picking up toys, cleaning up after them when they eat lunch. just the little things. but listen in mama, there is so much power in those mundane moments. those little moments that we don’t really appreciate until they are right there in front of you.” -KAITLIN
maddie kicks things off by discussing a previous moment with her son eating lunch where she was sitting there and it clicked: there are many big moments in motherhood, but there are so many important small moments too.
“wow, there are so many little moments that if we would just pay attention to them, they hold so much power” -maddie
in the world of social media we are constantly seeing the big moments in people’s lives and we get to excited waiting on our own big moments that we dismiss the small ones.
maddie shares that when we take a step back and change our mindset to: i get to change his diaper. i get to cook him lunch. i get to breastfeed him. what can the lord teach me through these small moments?” each day of our lives becomes that much sweeter.
BEING PRESENT IN THE LITTLE MOMENTS IN YOUR CHILD’S LIFE CREATES MEMORIES FOR YOUR CHILD THAT ARE GOING TO STICK WITH THEM JUST AS MUCH AS YOU SHOWING UP TO ALL OF THEIR SPORTING GAMES. LIFE EVENTS, ETC.
FOR INSTANCE, IF YOUR TODDLEr IS PLAYING WITH A TOY AND THEY ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT SOMETHING THEY DID, IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO PRAISE THAT SMALL STEP BECAUSE FOR THEM IT IS A REALLY BIG DEAL. KAITLIN REMINDS LISTENERS THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE GOING TO REMEMBER US CELBRATING THEM IN EVEN THE SMALL MOMENTS AND THEY ARE GOING TO PAY ATTENTION TO HOW WE RESPOND IN THE MUNDANE MOMENTS.
MADDIE SHARES THAT SHE HAS YOUNGER SIBLINGS WITH A LARGE AGE GAP AND SHE KNOWS THAT HOW SHE REACTED TO HER YOUNGER SIBLINGS AS THE BIG SISTER PLAYED A LARGE ROLE IN HER CURRENT RELATIONSHIP WITH THOSE SIBLINGS.
YOU NEVER WANT YOUR CHILD TO FEEL LIKE A BURDEN TO YOU.
IF YOUR CHILD HAS SEEN YOU HAVE A NEGATIVE ATTITUDE ABOUT THINGS SUCH AS CLEANING UP TOYS, THEIR LUNCH, ETC., YOUR CHILD WILL CARRY THAT SAME ATTITUDE INTO THOSE TASKS when they are doing them for themselves.
PARENTHOOD IS MORE THAN JUST THE BIG MOMENTS. YOUr CHILDREN SEE YOU GETTING ON THE FLOOR WITH THEM AND HELPING THEM DO MUNDANE TASKS AND SMALL TASKS SUCH AS THAT WILL CARRY OVER WITH THEM TO THEIR OWN CHILDREN ONE DAY.
the small moments are something that you may have prayed for before or that someone now is praying for, don’t take them for granted.
try looking at the mundane moments as something you get to do instead of have to do—your perspective makes all of the difference.
maddie and kait offer tips for listeners on leaning in on the mundane moments:
thank god for the messes—messes are a sign of life and mean that your children are living their best life in all of the small situations. messes make life fun for kids.
stop thinking about “one day” and start focusing on today.
be in the word and talk to god in prayer—let the mundane moments humble you through prayer and giving it all to God.
being a mom is holy work. allowing the word to transform your life will humble you more than you could ever imagine.
Truths straight from the lord:
here is holy.
we are raising the next generation.
i can experience him through the mundane.
every single day is a million little miracles.
the practice of peace and presence in my daily life changes everything.
