Being vs. Doing: Finding True Intimacy with Jesus
In today’s hustle and bustle, it’s easy to get caught up in the “doing” of life—checking things off our to-do list, staying productive, and pushing through the daily grind. But what happens when we’re so focused on doing that we forget to just be? In this episode of The Refined Sisterhood podcast, Kait and I dive into the difference between “being” and “doing,” and how to find true intimacy with Jesus, even when life feels overwhelming.
The Struggle Between Being and Doing
As women, we often wear so many hats. Whether we’re moms, wives, daughters, friends, or working professionals, the demands of life can leave us feeling like we’re always “doing.” But the truth is, while our roles are important, they can’t be our identity. Our worth isn’t in what we do—it’s in who we are in Christ.
In this episode, we reflect on the tension between being still with Jesus and getting caught up in the busyness of life. There’s so much pressure to perform, achieve, and accomplish, but Jesus calls us to rest in Him and simply be in His presence.
Jesus Models the Art of Being
Throughout His life on Earth, Jesus modeled what it means to be still and rest in the Father’s presence. He withdrew to quiet places, spent time in prayer, and was intentional about connecting with His Father. If Jesus, the Son of God, needed time alone with God, how much more do we?
We dive into what it looks like to prioritize “being” with Jesus over “doing” for Him. It’s about taking time to rest, listen, and allow God to speak to us without the distractions of everyday life. The goal is to find intimacy with Jesus that doesn’t come from performance or striving, but from simply being in His presence and receiving His love.
Finding Balance in the Busy
Being still with Jesus doesn’t mean we stop working or serving. But it does mean we make space in our busy lives for intentional time with Him. Whether it’s a few minutes in the morning, during a lunch break, or at the end of the day, we can all carve out time to just be with Jesus.
In this episode, we share practical ways to shift our focus from doing to being. We talk about the importance of:
Creating intentional moments of rest: Taking time to sit in quiet and be with Jesus.
Prioritizing prayer and reflection: Moving beyond our lists of requests to simply listening to God’s voice.
Allowing God to define our identity: Embracing who we are in Christ, not based on what we do.
What It Means to Be Loved by Jesus
When we stop focusing on what we need to do and simply rest in Jesus’ love, we find peace. His love doesn’t depend on our productivity or performance. In John 15:9, Jesus says, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.” Remaining in His love means we don’t have to strive to earn His affection—He already loves us deeply.
How to Start Prioritizing Being with Jesus
If you’re ready to stop striving and start simply being in God’s presence, here are a few ways you can begin:
Start your day with God: Before jumping into your to-do list, take a few moments to pray and focus on God’s presence.
Practice silence: Set aside time during the day to sit quietly with God and just listen.
Embrace your identity in Christ: Remind yourself that you are loved, chosen, and enough because of Jesus, not because of what you do.
Closing Thoughts
We hope this episode encourages you to slow down, be still, and prioritize intimacy with Jesus. When we learn to be with Him, we’ll experience peace and freedom that can’t be found in doing.
Thank you for joining us on this journey, and we pray that you experience the deep love of Jesus in a fresh way today.
