052 : Body Image, Boundaries, & Positive Mindset w/ Reagan Davis
How to Build a Healthy Relationship with Food and Yourself: A Conversation with Reagan Davis.
Welcome to today’s podcast episode! We’re thrilled to have Reagan with us, a passionate sports nutritionist and former college softball player, whose mission is to help young women build a healthy relationship with food and themselves. Reagan's journey is one that’s deeply personal—one that intertwines her expertise in nutrition with her own experience of overcoming an eating disorder during her college years. Today, she shares how her faith in Jesus is the cornerstone of her approach, empowering women to nourish their bodies effectively and heal their relationship with food.
Reagan’s Story: Overcoming Challenges and Finding Purpose
Reagan’s story starts in the world of athletics, where, as a college softball player, she faced not only the pressures of performance but also the strain of an eating disorder. As a young athlete, Reagan felt the intense pressure to meet certain physical expectations—expectations that were amplified by the culture of social media and the athletic industry.
For Reagan, social media became a place where vulnerability could be difficult to manage. As she navigated the spotlight, the pressure to look a certain way grew, causing her to struggle with her self-image and the way she viewed her body. Over time, Reagan realized that this external pressure wasn’t just a physical struggle but a spiritual one. In her own healing process, she learned the importance of setting boundaries, both online and offline, in order to maintain her values and protect her mental and emotional health.
Today, Reagan channels those experiences into her work as a nutritionist, guiding young women to build healthier relationships with food, their bodies, and themselves. Through a holistic approach that blends nutrition, faith, and self-care, she helps others achieve optimal health and performance while also deepening their spiritual connection with God.
The Way You Speak to Yourself Matters
One of the most powerful lessons Reagan shares is the importance of how we speak to ourselves. Society often feeds us the lie that happiness is tied to appearance—thinking things like, “When I look a certain way, I’ll be happy.” But at its core, this mindset is not just unhealthy; it’s also a spiritual struggle.
Reagan explains, “Trying to solve spiritual problems with physical solutions only leads to pain, isolation, loneliness, addiction, and defeat.” In her experience, true healing doesn’t come from changing your physical appearance but from turning your focus to God. By placing your trust in Him, He can heal the spiritual wounds that often drive us to unhealthy behaviors.
Remember, your body is a temple that belongs to God, not something to idolize. God calls us to take care of our bodies, not to exalt them. As Reagan points out, this shift in perspective can bring freedom from the chains of comparison and self-doubt.
Physical Beauty as a Reflection of God’s Glory
Reagan acknowledges that physical beauty isn’t inherently bad. In fact, she believes that physical appearance can reveal the glory of God’s creative abilities. We were made in His image—an incredible and complex creation that reflects His beauty in ways we may never fully understand. God values the diversity of human appearance, as seen in the way He has uniquely designed each one of us.
However, it’s important to remember that God judges our hearts, not our physical appearance. As the Bible reminds us in 1 Samuel 16:7, “The Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” In our pursuit of health and beauty, we must keep this perspective in mind, appreciating the bodies God has given us while prioritizing inner beauty and character.
Training Your Brain to Be More Holy and Positive
Reagan shares several practical tips for reprogramming your brain to focus on holiness and positivity—starting with spending time in God’s word each day. This practice helps set the tone for the day, shaping your thoughts and responses to the challenges you’ll face. Prayer also plays a key role, allowing you to envision and prepare for moments when you may be tempted to compare yourself to others or fall into negativity.
Setting limits around your entertainment choices is another helpful strategy. Reagan encourages us to be mindful of the content we consume, as it has a profound impact on our mental and emotional state. As Matthew 6:22-23 reminds us, “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.”
By being conscious of the things that pull us away from God—whether that’s social media, certain TV shows, or even the people we surround ourselves with—we can protect our minds and hearts from the lies of comparison and self-doubt.
Final Thoughts and Words of Wisdom
Before we wrap up today’s episode, Reagan shares a final piece of advice: “If you could leave our listeners with one piece of wisdom, what would it be?” Her answer? “Focus on your relationship with God above all else. The more you fix your eyes on Him, the less you’ll be pulled into the lies of the world. Your identity is in Christ, not in your appearance or achievements.”
Closing Thoughts and Prayer
We are so grateful to Reagan for being with us today and for sharing her insights, wisdom, and encouragement. Let’s close this episode with a prayer, asking God to help us see ourselves as He sees us and to heal any wounds we may carry in our relationship with food, our bodies, or our self-worth.
